Dr. Derek Kirkham is a licensed practitioner of East Asian medicine (EAMP) in the state of Washington. He has a particular focus in using acupuncture and herbal medicine to treat acute and chronic pain, sport injuries, injuries from auto accidents, respiratory issues and giving supportive care to cancer patients.

Dr. Kirkham achieved his Doctoral degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine with a focus in advanced pain management and integrative cancer care from Bastyr University. His Master’s degree in Traditional Oriental Medicine is from the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in San Diego, California. He is certified in acupuncture and herbal medicine by the NCCAOM and has a Diplomate of Oriental Medicine.

Dr. Kirkham has extensive knowledge in the assessment and treatment of back pain, neck pain, joint pain (shoulder, hip, knee, wrist, ankle) and headaches. He also works with athletes and weekend warriors to address the musculoskeletal conditions and injuries that come from athletic performance.

Dr. Kirkham utilizes his advanced training in integrative cancer care to help relieve and manage the signs and symptoms associated with cancer, cancer related treatments, and cancer recovery. His treatments are designed to complement and not to replace traditional Western cancer care.

With every patient, he develops a treatment plan that takes into account the unique circumstances of their specific injury or ailment. In practice, he uses a blend of acupuncture, tui na (bodywork), stretching, exercise techniques, cupping, gua sha, cold laser, herbal remedies, supplements, dietary adjustments and health education.

Dr. Kirkham is an adjunct faculty member at Bastyr University where he teaches didactic classes as well as supervises students in the clinic. He enjoys the process of teaching students and helping them develop their clinical skills, preparing them for a future in East Asian Medicine. Along with his private practice and teaching responsibilities, Dr. Kirkham is also an active member of the Washington East Asian Medicine Association.

Activities of Interest Dr. Kirkham is an avid runner and has participated in a number of local half marathons including the Seattle Marathon. He also enjoys indoor rock climbing and cycling. He incorporates his understanding of athletics and biomechanics into the treatment of sport injuries.
